Engineer · Investor · Company builder

Different disciplines.
One operating instinct.

I'm Newell Starks. My work has crossed engineering, computing, venture capital, leveraged buyouts, governance, and building companies. The common thread: understand the underlying system, make the tradeoffs explicit, and get the work done.

Working at the intersection of technology, business economics, and practical execution.

The working philosophy

Good ideas are common.
Execution is the test.

Engineering, investment, and general management see different parts of the same problem. The work improves when those perspectives are considered together.

01 / SYSTEMS

Understand the mechanics

Find the actual constraints, dependencies, and failure modes before making a technology or operating choice.

02 / ECONOMICS

Understand the incentives

Consider capital, ownership, risk, and the real economics of the alternatives—not just technical feasibility.

03 / ACCOUNTABILITY

Make it operable

Prefer approaches that can be explained, verified, repaired, and carried forward by the people responsible for results.

Experience

A working life across
technology and business.

A selective overview rather than a comprehensive résumé. Each chapter informed the next.

Engineering & computing

Early work in computing and automation

An engineering foundation, including studies at Rutgers and work connected to Rice University's R2 computing project, led to an enduring interest in the interface between machines, software, and real operating problems.

Technology & management

From technical problems to business systems

Business studies at the University of Michigan and experience with Texas Instruments and technology businesses broadened the focus from hardware and software into markets, commercial decisions, and management.

Investment & governance

Private equity, board leadership, and strategic decisions

As a vice president at Citicorp Venture Capital, I worked on private equity investing, including Sterling. I later served on Sterling’s board, chaired it in 2003, and served as vice chairman and chief strategy officer at Stratos International.

Entrepreneurship & advisory

Building, advising, and operating

Across ventures and advisory work, the emphasis has been practical: helping decision-makers solve problems involving strategy, operations, transactions, and organizational execution.

Current focus / NewellOI

The next operating discipline is intelligent automation.

My current work centers on NewellOI: developing AI operating teams that can help companies execute repeatable work while preserving institutional knowledge, clear accountability, and owner control.
